Dates for your diary: September

·Australia

A reminder of the important dates and deadlines coming up this September, and two rule changes that are easy to miss. Check your own regulator for anything specific to you.

This month

  • Monday 7 September. August payroll tax return and payment, if your wages are over your state's threshold (NSW, Victoria and Queensland all fall due on the 7th). August payroll tax return due
  • Monday 21 September. August trust account reconciliation: the Uniform General Rules and the Queensland regulation both give you 15 working days after month end, and a principal has to review and sign
  • Wednesday 30 September. The September quarter ends. September's trust reconciliation is then due by 21 October (22 October in Queensland, after the King's Birthday holiday), and the July to September

Two changes already in force

  • Payday super. Since 1 July 2026, super must reach each employee's fund within 7 business days of payday. The quarterly deadline no longer applies.
  • AML/CTF. Since 1 July 2026, a practice that provides a designated service (property transactions, holding client money, and setting up companies or trusts, among others) is an AUSTRAC reporting entity

A bit about Diract

Tired of paying a premium for practice software that is slow to load and slower to respond? Diract is practice management built for Australian law firms. It supports real team collaboration, drafts your time entries with AI, and lets you customise your workflow to match how your practice runs. Firms using it report cutting admin work by around 75% and time spent recovering fees by 50%.

  • Matters with tasks, documents, client updates and the full email history, filed automatically from Gmail or Outlook.
  • Time and billing. Capture time as you go, bill from the unbilled list, and see what is unpaid at a glance. AI can draft your time entries for you, ready to check and submit.
  • Email filing. File a client email to its matter once and everyone on your team sees it labelled the same way in their own inbox.
  • Document storage. Link your OneDrive or Google Drive so matter documents save straight into folders you already use.
  • Precedents and settlement adjustments, so the documents you produce every week take minutes instead of an afternoon.
